Be careful what you buy. A $125 in-ceiling speaker shouldn't be compared to a premium floor-standing speaker, but it's a pretty decent effort from Yamaha. The speakers are covered with fiberglass insulation. By the way, Yamaha suggests covering the speakers with fiberglass to improve their performance. They don't explain why this improves the sound, I can only assume that it reduces low frequency reflections from the roof and back to other parts of the ceiling. There is a grille on the back of the speakers to protect the driver. Overall these little speakers have good build quality. A powerful magnet, some sturdy speaker wire clips (bananas or bare wire will work) and a crossover with a huge capacitor and some inductors well protected by some kind of clear hard plastic cover. I use this with Amphony Model 300. Class-T amp, bluetooth, microscopic and cheap stereo amp. The combination gave a soft but amazing foundation, the mids were overemphasized and the tops were fairly clear and well defined. While cleaning up the mess I had made through the setup, I listened to Ed Sheeran, Adele and U2 for about half an hour and was quite happy with the detail that can be discerned on the recordings, stopping every now and then just listen to the recordings. The quality is much better than the background music. However, there is no doubt that a cheap amplifier and installation in an open attic will spoil the sound. I just don't know how much until I play around with the setup. Okay, little disclaimer: I consider myself an audiophile (or at least spend way too much money on my audio gear) and am desperately trying to walk the fine line between appreciating these speakers for their decent performance and not giving anyone the impression that these speakers can replace your front speakers in your home audio system. While my description of these speakers makes them sound mediocre, they are light years ahead of the cheap speakers the builder put in the house. They're so good I'm considering replacing all 10 pairs of speakers in my house with them. They strike me as the right compromise between cost and performance for a whole house system. Before I do that I'm going to hook them up to a good stereo and see what happens. I will update this review accordingly.
