You must use the app.

There is no way to set the temperature alarm except through the application. In addition, the app will not work if you do not have location enabled. This connects via Bluetooth, so why should it know your location? If you turn off location detection after launching the app, it still works fine, it tells me it's not needed. Maybe I'm paranoid, but I prefer to always omit the location.
