I have tried garden drills and they are difficult to use when the ground is not ideal. I had to plant a huge amount of ground cover so I decided to try that too. It worked flawlessly, I didn't have to keep re-tightening the auger and it cut through soil like a knife through butter. If you're planting something larger than a vine, you'll need to drill two or three holes together, but that's not a big deal because it drills holes very quickly. The only problem is that you have to have a 1/2" drill bit, so that costs extra, but I bought a cheap electric one so I don't have to worry about running out of battery in the middle of my work. It worked amazing for me.
