My boy who normally wears a spike and service harness scratches this collar with no problem. Maybe it's just weird to sit on. But the problem lies in the placement of things in the collar. When you have a tandem carabiner attached to this collar's D-ring prong, it puts the word "service" UNDER his neck where it doesn't really matter. The word "Service" is also written under the nape of the neck if you have access to the handle on top of the dog. So if I just held on to the leash or used a pen, it still wasn't visible. I put a piece of velcro on top of the velcro between the handle and the collar to avoid scratching my hand with the velcro there. If you don't use a tandem collar and don't care if the word "Service" is visible, then this is a good collar.
