Review on ÖKOCAT All-Natural Wood Clumping Litter: Enhanced for SEO by Lisa Perez

Contains species of wood that are toxic to cats

I'm really upset with this Okocat Wood cat litter and here's why. There are two important aspects to consider: 1) Efficacy and desirable properties 2) Toxicity and safety of this product to cats and humans. And given the cancer warning from California. Prop.65 placed on the crate. lightweight and easy to scoop. > Softwood smells amazingly natural and fresh and stays fresh throughout use. > Excellent clumping properties; hard clumps won't fall apart > I haven't noticed an unusual amount of staining - all kitty litter has some level of marks. 🛑 Disadvantages: The disadvantages of this product are decisive for me. Based on my extensive research, I believe wood-based cat litter is neither safe nor non-toxic. They are all conifers and therefore contain phenols/oils which are highly toxic to all cats. Phenols give the filler a pleasant smell. When bedding gets wet it releases phenol. With chronic exposure, phenols can cause kidney, liver, and neurological damage in cats. > I've been told that kiln drying removes toxins. However, through careful research in the lumber industry, I have learned that the purpose of kiln drying is to remove water and NOT to remove toxins (phenols) from the wood. Phenols are also found in many household cleaners such as Pines*l. It is very important that cat parents research every ingredient in household products to protect their kittens. Directly on the packaging is a California Proposition 65 warning stating that inhaling sawdust causes cancer. Cats rummage through the litter, creating dust. People empty and scoop the cat litter causing dust. > I have read other reviews mentioning that this litter has caused their cats and themselves to cough/sneeze, runny nose and throat and have breathing problems; Wood-based cat litter causes respiratory irritation/discomfort. I really wish this and other wood based cat litter was 100% safe for cats because I really enjoyed it. However, I love my cats much, much more than any product. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend using wood-based cat litter. I hope this information has helped you in your decision to purchase a litter box. I wish you and your kittens all the best!
