Although the lid is easy to remove.
When I bought this I thought you'd have to take the cover off almost every time you adjusted the volume or turned iPod Shuffle on or off, but you can actually press the buttons with the cover on - a pleasant surprise . The cover is easy to remove. It won't fall off when you move the device, but it's very easy to put on and take off. I see that as a plus but I can see it as a minus when used on young children.
