These items will last forever with care. The trick is to rinse and wring them out after use so they don't get smelly for a while. But over time they will stink, but that's okay! I have found that cooking cures this. When they start to spoil (and the dishwasher or washing machine doesn't seem able to cope) I cook them in a saucepan on the stovetop for about 5 minutes. Then I rinse them well with cold water, clean the pan and cook again for 5 minutes. They come out without a hint of odor and look and smell like new. This way I can easily get a year out of those 3 packs of sponges.
