Review on Thule Awning Adapter Roof Black by Allan Ryser

Supplied carriage bolts are useless

Foreword: I have been buying Thule products for over 20 years and find them to be of high quality materials and design. I still use Thule products that are over 20 years old. This is the first Thule product I've been disappointed with. I purchased a pole adapter kit (490001) to mount the Hideaway to my classic square pole. When assembling the adapter and trying to attach the canopy to the rack with the provided carriage bolts, I found that the carriage bolts were free to rotate in the metal plates provided. The square holes in the plates are larger than the square of the carriage bolt to avoid snagging; This makes it impossible to tighten the bots and attach the canopy to the rack. This is unexpected for a Thule product. For a $100 MSRP adapter, this is unacceptable. Working stainless steel fittings (hex head) cost about $15. Purchasers of this adapter may need to purchase additional M6 or 1/4" hex head screws, washers and locknuts to complete the installation (8 screws are required for standard rack mounting). Supplied with 2" M6 carriage bolts with washers and locknuts to connect the posts (four T-bolts are also supplied for the T-posts). 1/4" bolts will fit on the supplied hardware in place of M6 bolts. Aside from Screw issues the plate and cover are made of high quality durable materials as you would expect from a Thule product Mounting to a T-rail post should work without any additional equipment.

Pros
  • Attaches to trusses up to 90mm wide or in T-rails
Cons
  • High price
