I could not feel the ridges on one side of the lead wires. So it happened that the "grooved" neutral conductor was labeled in black on the side, but I'm not sure if that's always the case. My 25 year old brass stiffel lamps were a bit difficult for the hobbyist to make because they were wide/narrow at the base. half wide, then very narrow. It was difficult to get the wires through. So I attached the end of the electrical cord to a straightened metal bracket (hard to find) and fed the cord through the lamp with no trouble. Some parts from the new top of the kit were too small for the top of the lamp, so I used the parts that originally came with the lamp. It worked! Lamps are functional again!
