Bought because my parents have a compost heap and I envy them... I have a Vitamix and after researching I found they make this FoodCycler product too. After reading the reviews I pulled the trigger and use it daily to compost various things that come out of the kitchen and garden to put back in the garden. I have no idea how long the carbon filters will last, but the smell is absolutely zero and the vapor is barely noticeable. when the block is running. It makes some clicking noises that my roommates thought someone was trying to open our front door, and a low hum can be heard (presumably the block and its parts are spinning inside to mix and grind organic material). But these sounds are not intrusive and blend in with the background noise of our house and street noises. I usually add squeezed lemon, coffee grounds (paper filter included), occasionally fig tree leaves on our porch, romaine heart cutouts. from my salad and a selection of other veggies that may be by-catch when preparing dinner. I've added spoiled bread, extra citrus peels and leaves, and even old tea bags (make sure they're not plastic!). a batch of nutrient-rich compost soil, ready to be poured into your patio garden, flower bed or anything else that needs soil with a little kick. Best of all, this is done in hours, while traditional compost takes weeks (even months) to fully prepare a batch of organic matter. I know it's not fully compostable when the FoodCycler "bakes" a batch, but it's enough to add soil where it's needed and it will continue to decompose, fueling your gardening project. Anything you put in the pot will be locked in the mechanism on the outside of the bucket (which should contain all the organic matter). I'm not at the point where I need to clean the whole block (not just the compost bin) yet, so this will be an educational experience. Also a bucket lid (if you collect items) and a compressor lid (which you rotate). into lockdown mode while the device is running) are two separate parts. This way you can either put the lid on the bucket or lock the lid. Not both. It would be nice to see them incorporated into a future release so you don't lose one while the other is in use. Otherwise I like it. If you are remotely interested in composting or gardening in an apartment or home with no garden, buy this. It will change the way you dispose of organic plant waste and make you think about gardening and greening your habits. I love my FoodCycler!
