As if I wanted to put 5 stars, but.

Speakers are difficult to judge as sound is subjective and settings vary widely. And in my setup I got some pretty unexpected results. I bought two sets of two speakers. The first two were installed in the ceiling, drywall, on the ground floor. Standard rafters, modern insulation etc. These were set up as rear speakers in a 5.1 configuration but are often used with stereo sound for music so sound quality is important. In this configuration these speakers sound pretty decent - I'm not saying "excellent" because I expect a bit more mid/bass from the size of the speaker, but actually very good. This guy comparing his frustration with $150 speakers to $750 speakers hasn't checked his wallet yet. You *get* what you pay for. It's worth mentioning that I am driving these 105w speakers from a Denon amp and they have been tweaked with Audyssey. My installation of the first set was painless - a $25 variable speed hole saw and a Phillips head screwdriver. Plus, of course, laying acoustic wires through the ceiling. They are gigantic (e.g. 9 inches tall) and the frame feels very solid. My only physical complaint is that there is no barrier between the electronics and the world. You *know* that in a few months the crossovers and everything else will be COVERED. However, based on perfectly normal sound and a known number of form factors, I bought two more speakers to use for multi-room sound elsewhere in the house. ' Far away in the 'cave' - there is no barrier between rooms, only one step, but the speakers are set to mono. Each of these other rooms has access to a large underground area directly above. Not an attic, but a large area. "Living Room" is an old building with drywall and little to no insulation, "Living Room" is a new building with drywall and adequate insulation. Obviously, both speakers are powered by the same 105-watt Denon. the speaker in the cave sounds very similar to the range of the channels in other rooms - generally good but a little weak in the low/mid ranges. Suitable for music at an acceptable volume. The living room speaker sounds COMPLETELY different - bright highs, good mids and lows that I would expect from an 8" woofer. I can't explain such an obvious difference in sound quality. . Drywall 1/2" thick. That's a big one Difference. I'll work on that a bit, but I'll probably reinforce the ceiling in the cave with 1/2" or so thick MDF (max thickness for attachment is about 1 1/8") and see if that's the case makes a difference It would be an interesting experiment.
