This pump is very handy for cleaning gravel. To use it, just plug the vacuum part into the fish tank and then make sure the other end of the hose (which should go towards the bucket or something) is under the fish tank itself. Crank the starter, squeeze a few times. Be careful because once the water starts flowing, you can accidentally splash it all over the room! Therefore, after spinning, quickly turn it face down so that the water goes into the bucket. The pump sucks up the dirt on the gravel very well without sucking up the gravel itself. The rate at which the water is flowing is pretty fast, so in my 20 gallon tank I typically dump 30% of the water out to get all the gravel out. To reduce the suction of the water, you can simply squeeze the tube and restrict the flow. The instructions on the box aren't very clear as they are written as if you don't have a wringer starter; But after reading reviews of Revain, I quickly figured out how to use it. All in all a good gravel cleaner and a must have item to keep your aquarium clean!
