A few years ago I started making infused coffee using a cheap red plastic cup. It had downward sloping crests as standard instead of horizontal (wavy) ones and three large holes in the bottom which meant the coffee didn't really have much time to bloom. I ended up using over 3 heaping tablespoons per 12-ounce cup, which was plenty. I was uncomfortable drinking acidic coffee steeped in aging plastic, so I looked for a ceramic option. Kalita Wave was a bit more expensive than other brands, but I was intrigued by the idea of changing the flow of water, so I went for it. It was 100% worth it. Whether it's a wavy design, smaller holes, or both, the hot water has time to color the coffee. I use the more usual 2 heaping tablespoons for the same 12 ounce cup and the coffee tastes better too. All in all, it's worth paying another ten bucks.
