Great results for some target devices, but output signals are not suitable for all devices

I was a bit hesitant to order this converter due to conflicting reviews. I bought it anyway and I don't regret my purchase. The device's physical configuration is only "fair": The two slide switches for selecting the output (S-Video/Composite-Video and NTSC/PAL) are tiny and somewhat awkward to operate due to their size; and the power plug is not very tight, so it is easy to pull out when moving the device. However, the internal electronics and power supply are still functional (at least for now). The problem with mixed reviews, I think, is that the signals coming out of the two video outputs (S-video and composite video) are a bit non-standard. When connecting the HDMI input to a device powered by a laptop's HDMI output and displaying 16:9 material on the laptop, the results when connecting the outputs to an LCD TV were disappointing: (a) The signal from the S-Video output gave a black and white picture cropped to 4:3 with some aspect ratio distortion; and (b) the composite video output produced a color image that was less cropped but with the same aspect ratio distortion and very poor resolution. However, when I hooked up the S-Video output to a Dazzle video capture device and recorded video on another PC, the quality of the resulting capture was excellent: the image was in colour, the resolution was excellent, and the image displayed correctly in the aspect ratio 16:9. Having originally intended to use a converter, I was completely satisfied with the result. I'd be interested (if anyone has signal analysis tools) what is it about video signals that drives some displays crazy, and if it's something that more expensive converters avoid.
