Not recommended: not safe for cats!

Bought and installed, cat immediately taught to go through, I thought everything was fine. 15 minutes later one of the cats plays with it and wedges its paw between the flap and the piping; completely frightened the cat and he could not get out. I pulled it out without seriously hurting him (or me!), but if I hadn't been here it might have gone wrong. I checked with my finger and it's pretty easy to pinch/pinch it in the door when closing. A person will understand that to get out you need to stop pulling and squeeze the valve, but a cat. At least my cats aren't that smart. Is it like that toy, what's it called, the Chinese finger trap? It's also possible, and I think my cat got her claw in the seam between the door insert and the door itself; The door does not come with a "pipe" or plastic filler to fit doors thicker than 1/2" (mine is a 1.25" interior door). I made my own plastic insert (which was annoying as the two sides of the door don't match the dimensions of the insert so a flat piece of plastic won't really fit) but still there is an inevitable seam (with this design) that one cat can dig into the claw exactly where it would be pinched. I'll look for a door with a soft flap/curtain, or a door with a smarter hinge that can "give" a bit when the door's paw gets in the way, or at least a door with a smooth edge, which might give the paw a better chance to slip out when the cat stops twitching. Now I just hope the one I find isn't smaller since there's already a hole of that size in my door :(.

Pros
  • Cat doors
Cons
  • I say nothing
