I love Keen hiking shoes and boots, and while I generally prefer the low-rise shoes, these mid-rise boots have their place. They support my ankles better than shoes, although they also rub more, especially at first. When you expect to hike rough terrain, these are more protective overall. Like most Keen hiking shoes/boots, they are waterproof, with rugged treads. I love the kinked laces that keep them from untying as easily. The soles are thick, and I feel much taller than I am when I wear them. That elevation definitely makes the mid-rise essential since it could destabilize your foot without adequate support. I also have no fear of the soles wearing out before the shoes do. Overall, the boots are comfortable and well-fitting, even if they do need to be broken in before wearing them all day. I wear between an 8.5 and a 9, depending on the manufacturer. Because of my past experience with Keen, I went with the larger size. They tend to run a little small. These are great hiking boots to get you through rocky, muddy, and steep terrain. If you are between sizes, go for the larger. And make sure you allow enough time to break them in before you go on a long hike.-- Debbie Lee Wesselmann
