In my opinion it was a great purchase. I have read many bad reviews about these radios but after using them I am very happy with them. They have a great range better than I expected. I mean you won't be 40 miles away from them like they say in dense forests or crowded urban areas. But if you know about radio waves, vegetation absorbs radio waves, and the more obstacles, the shorter the range. Weather and atmospheric conditions also have a lot to do with it. The GMRS FRS frequencies are just above the 70cm band in the UHF band and for what they are they are great. Keep in mind that their battery life isn't that great, I get 6 to 7 hours from it with high performance and fairly constant use during my hunting trip. It would be cool if they used lithium ion batteries instead of nickel cadmium. Also, I've obtained a gmrs license through the FCC, which I understand is a legal requirement, although many don't. If you get caught you can be charged. But hey, it's $70 for a 10-year license. Also covers your entire family. Midland has excellent customer service. I had a small problem with the batteries and they just sent me new ones which I received free of charge 2 days later, no questions asked. So these radios get two thumbs up from me.
