Potholders are good except when you need to maneuver something heavy or large. These gloves give you the grip and dexterity to move a heavy cast iron Dutch Oven full of food in and out of the oven. I wouldn't say how long you can keep hot items in these gloves, but I will say they withstand the heat generated by my standard oven long enough to do whatever I need them to do. I specifically buy these gloves because they seem to offer the best value for money and I feel like I made a good investment. I'll add some of the other reviews about keeping your gloves dry. This goes for any oven mitts or potholders. If they get wet, water can get in and turn into steam when heated, which will burn you. Before use, make sure they are completely dry after washing or after splashing.
