This was on two trips, about 800 miles round trip each. We love it! It's just shocking how much he holds! I can easily fit a large 27-gallon basket, two standard Samsonite carry-on suitcases, a few smaller weekend bags, and a couple of blankets, beach towels, and pillows. We bought this for road trips (primarily camping and from Phoenix to Southern California). We have two children in car seats and a medium sized dog. The main reason we wanted something like this is because we drive two different SUVs in the same way. That makes more sense than the costly investment of a fixed roof rack for just one car. Although we can fit everything, we would have preferred a little more space inside. One of our cars has roof rails and the other doesn't. Installation is very easy either way, and the storage bag is securely attached. Whenever we travel with it, we're going somewhere between 65 and 85 mph on the AZ and CA freeways, so we're experiencing a bit of backsliding, but we're only making some adjustments during normal stops. I have noticed that some people have said they are concerned about the lack of security in this matter. We think we won't leave it unattended and in fact anyone can open the lockable drawer. Another downside noticed by users was the ability to quickly access things. That's true, but if you're only using it for transport, that's not a problem. Keep essential items in the car including a change of clothes and a cosmetic bag for long trips. A few things to mention: - This should be obvious, but the instructions don't mention it at all - You will need to tie the strap at the end when the roof rack is fully attached. I believe that at high speeds they could easily and quickly detach from the buckles. We tie a double knot at 3 knots as close to the buckle as possible and then tuck the ends in to minimize wind noise. The belts need to be TENSIONED, so this shouldn't be an easy task. As mentioned, don't worry about this unless you pack it all up. Seems like it would be pretty inefficient if it wasn't! The black and yellow 27 gallon Costco and Home Depot containers match the sides perfectly and fill the bag very well. We did find that during the extreme Arizona summer heat, the bag got kind of weird and soft, almost like the initial stages, literally. melt. It had almost grown into the roof of the car and it was almost impossible to move it even an inch. I would not recommend leaving this on your vehicle in extreme weather for longer than you need to. I would recommend putting it on the ground and packing it up before actually installing it on your car. Knowing how everything will fit together and being able to organize up to this step is a huge help - it won't be easy once it's in your car! After all, it tidies up well after a trip and can be stowed away surprisingly compactly. We don't know how we've lived with this carrier for so long and have already recommended it to friends!
