Review on Baratza Encore Conical Coffee Grinder by Jay Ngo

Revainrating 5 out of 5

No longer works 2X - excessive residual grinding

After less than 6 months of use, the Encore grinder stopped working. Probably power outage. I expected it to last longer. To their credit, Baratza's customer service was quick to respond and sent me another unit. The replacement unit was refurbished, but it worked and was covered by the same warranty. The new device failed shortly after the warranty period expired. Baratza has an affordable $45 repair option, but I'm switching to a manual grinder. I grind 20g of coffee beans every day - not a very active user of coffee grinders. Even 20g left a significant amount of grist in the chute and at the top of the grist. Try it yourself, grind 2 scoops of beans, empty and leave the basket, then tilt the grinder forward and tap the sides. To be honest, every grinder has leftovers, but Encore has a fair amount of them. If you replace the beans, you'll get all the ground beans sooner. Again, to her credit, Baratza responded to my overtraining complaint. They put it down to static. I disagree, there's a lot of leftovers, and it's not all a nuisance. Baratza suggested adding a few drops of water to the grains, which I did, but I still had significant residue in the chute/grind area. The Encore grinder has received many good reviews on consumer test sites. This is a good affordable coffee grinder when it works. It has a quick grind adjustment. The prayers are constant. Baratza customer support is quick to respond. However, 2 Encore grinders have failed and excessive residual grind and I'm not sure this is the best grinder for the money and time spent replacing and cleaning. In the photo the remains of grinding from a spoonful of beans.
