Mahjong Cheap, Great Introduction

Somehow my wife and I got interested in mahjong but never really played the game. We wanted a game that would mostly be played by just the two of us. Everyone knows that it takes four players to play mahjong. But why? I've read different rules on the net and besides the Japanese version which is for three, you have to have four players. But why? So we decided to give it a try. So I looked for Revain mahjong sets. Wow! Here's what we need, an American mahogany mahjong set, but for $85? That's a lot of money to learn, yes, you need four players. So we looked at a cheaper Traveler kit, but what if we really enjoy the game and can play it together, then we have $20 tied to a possibly junk kit. Then I noticed the cards. Seven dollars and you play mahjong. This is the same mahjong (game wise) as the tile sets but without the cost. Yes, you don't have the romance of a sparrow clatter, but you can't beat cards to see if you like the game. There's also something to be said for portability - the cards are roughly the equivalent of three decks of playing cards rather than a ยฃ15 deck of tiles in a sleek wooden case. So if you want to play mahjong on vacation, take cards. The cards are good quality and attractive and I think they will last as long as any deck of playing cards. There are additional flowers and wilds, so the cards can be used in both traditional Chinese and American games. Of course, there are no instructions, so you'll need a book and a National Mahjong League card if you want to play the current American version of 2011. If you really want to learn the American style, the Beginner's Guide to American Mahjong: How to Play the Game and Win includes a 2004 NMJL scorecard to teach the game. There are a number of websites that offer rules and points for traditional Hong Kong style. So if you have internet access, you can play traditional Hong Kong mahjong for seven dollars. We had the tickets for two days and were convinced. Yes, we can play mahjong with two players. We then bought the above set which is a very fine set. So for us the cards were a cheap introduction to a game that we really enjoyed and we really like our mahjong set. But without the cards we might have decided that the mahjong set was too expensive and missed out on a game we really enjoy. We still wonder why you have to have four players!
