Review on Rock N Roll Wild Man by Mark Sergio

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Superb double CD of his music from the 50's

This set has a lot going for it, although I wouldn't call it definitive. It omits his unsuccessful debut single Crazy Arms (which I have on another compilation of his music) along with some of his smaller hits, but contains all the main tracks. It also gives a reasonable idea of the country songs he was recording at the time, although, as you'd expect, most of the tracks here are uptempo rock 'n' roll. Later in his career, Jerry achieved considerable success as a country singer, but those recordings can be found elsewhere. So here you'll find classics like Great balls of fire, Whole lotta shakin 'goin' on, Breathless, High School. Confidential and What I Said, along with covers of country songs including no fewer than eight Hank Williams-related songs, six of which he wrote himself, as well as Wild Side of Life, I love you because and When my blue moon turns into including gold again. Jerry Lee was clearly a fan of Hank's music (and rightly so), but if the tracks here inspire you to explore the originals, try 40 Greatest Hits or The Anthology. It's worth noting that Jerry performs some of these country songs as up-tempo rock 'n' roll songs, so someone unfamiliar with these songs might not realize they started out as country songs. Here is a compilation of Jerry Lee songs. the talents of a singer and pianist at a great price.
