Great idea! The extra space compartment is perfect for stretching my 9 pound dog. My dog can sit and lie comfortably curled up in backpack mode. The only issue I have with this item is that when the flare is fully open there are angled cross straps at the junction between the pack and the flare. While my dog hasn't nibbled on them, but as I know dogs are concerned about them being chewed on or worse eaten because they can't be hidden or covered, they seem to be supportive straps for the dog's weight when In carrying mode it is on the back, please see the photo of these straps inside the backpack. When the extension is zipped up and not in use, these straps are still inside the pack and can be reached by the dog. I will cut the straps so my dog won't chew on them let alone eat them. There is a detachable safety belt that attaches to a metal loop. The backpack is a durable, strong metal reinforced material sewn into the backpack.
