Review on πŸ”§ Enhanced Motor Assembly for NuTone QT80 Series Fans - Model 0695B000 by Vincent Bain

Noise reduction achieved!

The existing fan has gradually gotten louder over the course of 16 years so I ordered a replacement motor assembly to save the hassle and labor of dismantling the existing QT-80 -Avoiding NB chassis in favor of a brand new fan model. Before I removed the original fan motor, I measured the noise level by placing my iPhone on a step stool just below the fan (about 4 feet from the fan shroud): 73.0 dB. When I got a new fan. I hooked it up (on the kitchen counter) and compared it to a (removed) existing fan motor (also on the kitchen counter). To be honest, I didn't notice a huge difference in volume. The old fan seemed to sit next to it just as quietly (uninstalled). I almost decided to return the fan now, but thought the comparison was only "legitimate" when installed. So I installed a completely new engine and did the same noise level measurement. I could tell it was less just by listening as I turned on the new motor (installed). The actual measured noise was 59.3 dB, a reduction of 13.7 dB. The audible difference is the lack of the loud engine "hum" that was present on the original engine. In fact, the reduction should have been even greater, since the ambient noise (without the fan running) was 3.7 dB higher in the test. a new engine compared to the original engine (50.7dB versus 47.0dB) because it was later in the day and the air conditioners were running (audibly) outside. Conclusion: I was skeptical when I received it, but I'm glad I put the new motor in. I'm sure it's not as quiet as some of the more modern exhaust fans on the market, but replacing the fan motor made a wonderful, noticeable difference and it was MUCH easier than ripping out the ceiling to remove/replace the fan housing. I've actually ordered two more to do the same job in other bathrooms in my house.

Pros

Cons
  • Not bad, but...
