Review on HMTECH 7" Raspberry Pi Monitor - Wall Mountable, Portable Gaming Monitor, PS4 Display, 60Hz HDMI by Jason Freeman

Plug and play touch screen that works well

I've tried this touchscreen on a Windows 10 Pro Mini PC, a standalone Raspberry Pi 4, a standalone Raspberry Pi 3B+, and a Raspberry Pi 4 installed in an Argon One M.2 case. Please note that Argon One is not just a Raspberry Pi case. It has built-in hardware that turns the Pi into a mini desktop. Installation was more or less plug and play. On the side of the display there is an on/off switch for switching the power supply and two cables for connecting the display to a computer. One is HDMI, the other Micro-USB. Both cables must be connected for the shield to work. If the USB cable is plugged into an outlet and not a computer, the screen will continue to function as a regular monitor. The touch functions will not work if the USB cable is not connected to the computer. In all cases, the image on the screen was sharp and clear. The touch functions were responsive with the exception of the Argon One. The Raspberry Pi 4 in the Argon One froze as soon as the USB cable was connected from the touchscreen to the computer. However, the touchscreen worked just like a normal monitor (i.e. plugged the USB cable into the socket instead of the Argon One). I intend to use this touchscreen as a custom user interface for an OctoPi running on a Raspberry PI 3B+ (Note: OctoPi is open source software that allows you to control 3D printers remotely). I would like to mount the Pi directly to the screen, which the Revain product listing says is possible. There are four 2.5mm diameter holes on the display board that match the four mounting holes on the Raspberry Pi (see photo). However, the manufacturer has not provided racks for mounting. The holes on the board are unthreaded so I can't just screw on a regular spacer. I'll probably have to design and 3D print some kind of case. Overall, this touchscreen works well. I think this is a good product. I would rate it 5 stars if the manufacturer provided some instructions and mounting hardware. I've seen other Raspberry Pi touchscreens that actually come with both mounting hardware and a case.

Pros
  • Good looking
Cons
  • Low Brightness: If the monitor's brightness is set too low, the image may appear washed out or too dark.
