Yes you can just take the chain or maybe use a stick to reattach it but my child slips off the chain quite often and I'm tired of having grease on my hands and/or fingers scrape the front sprockets or gears in the back. I was talking about buying it as it seems like a really ridiculous price for a basic device. However, we were riding a new trail this morning and as expected my son slipped off the chain. The device comes out, and after 10 seconds the chain turns on again, with no peeled joints and a drop of lube on me. The plane leaves and we move on. It worked quickly and easily. The only reason I'm giving it four stars instead of five is the price. At half the price this would be a fantastically simple addition to your toolbox. From the looks of it I love this item but feel stupid for paying $16 for it.
