A bit thicker than what I would like, since most of my time in the water are in the tropics, but they do the trick. I wear a size 12 - 13 and the XL fits well.I purchased these to ease the "bite" out of my fins. Also, when walking in or out of the ocean, it protects my feet from sharp objects. I haven't had the misfortune of stepping on a Sea Urchin with these, but I would imagine the sole is thick enough to withstand the needles, but from past experience (gloves), the fabric will not.As with all ocean equipment, you should rinse these well with fresh water, let them air dry before storing them out of direct sunlight.
