Good Budget Tripod: Solid Tripods

The Sabrent Carbon Fiber Tripod is an affordable ballhead tripod that should meet the needs of most hobbyists and semi-professionals. There are three main types of tripod heads for photography. Ball heads are very common because they are quick and easy to set up. Triangular heads require a bit more effort, but can also be used with heavier cameras. Gimbal tripods are generally high-end tripods and are used for large-bodied, long-zoom digital SLR cameras. For most compact mirrorless and smaller DSLR cameras, the ball head will probably fit most people. This tripod is a good size and should last a long time. As another reviewer pointed out, the weight reduction of this carbon fiber tripod is about 20% compared to the aluminum tripod. For me it's worth the extra price. The tripod is solid and well made. Instead of twist locks for the legs, this tripod uses lever locks, which is better. One leg has a foam handle for carrying. The head has three locks for the ball and socket, all of which work smoothly. The mounting plate is held in place with a screw instead of a spring-loaded quick release plate. This is not necessarily a bad thing (simple mechanism is more reliable?). The legs have regular rubber feet that can be screwed on to reveal the spikes for outdoor use. There is a spirit level on the tripod and head, which is very convenient - you can adjust it when shooting on an uneven surface. The tripod has a 360 degree mark, which is useful for panorama shots, for example. The included carry case is beautifully crafted from soft, Cordura-like synthetic fabric. This is a good budget tripod that is well built and the slight weight savings from the carbon fiber construction are welcome. The ball head runs smoothly and is large enough to support a variety of camera bodies. Those shooting with longer zooms and heavier bodies might want to look for a more expensive tripod, but this tripod is well thought out and suits most photographers on a tight budget in terms of price, features and performance.
