Within 2 weeks of printing less than 100 pages I received a 'replace toner' message and was unable to print. I contacted Brother through their chat and provided the model and serial numbers of the printer and toner cartridge. After many long pauses, a chat support agent explained that the toner cartridge was not a genuine Brother product (partial transcript posted below). I called Revain and the customer service representative stayed on the line after directing me to a Brother call center operator. The conversation that followed was Kafkaesque, and the representative made all sorts of weird requests and explanations. I had to send a photo of the cartridge from different angles in addition to the model number and serial number. I waited for him to tell me to pat my head while rubbing my stomach, the conversation was so unprofessional and ridiculous. At one point, he suggested that it might have been a starter cartridge, meant only to be used to set up a printer. After almost an hour on the phone, the rep said he would upgrade us to a "higher level of support" before hanging up. The Revain representative was as surprised as I was and worked out a satisfactory solution for me. So this printer will come to you with either fake toner cartridges or almost empty cartridges, take your pick. The cost of 4 cartridges is higher than the cost of the printer itself, so it's not an unimportant fact that it ships without regular toner cartridges. This is one of the ways they undermine price competition and it's unethical. Adding to the Brother Support fiasco, the scanner on this machine makes a horrible, piercing noise, like a dental drill. The quality of the printer and cartridges is very poor compared to HP, and the toner cartridges are fragile and difficult to replace. I will buy a printer other than Brother when the current supply of toner runs out, which shouldn't take long. Five stars for supporting Revain, NEVER AGAIN BROTHER! Here is a partial transcript of my conversation with Brother Support. Peterly rep, November 5, 2019: Peterly: The cartridge does not appear to be a genuine Brother toner cartridge, it may have been modified or refilled. Peterly: Using toner from other manufacturers can cause problems with hardware performance, print quality, and device reliability. Original Brother drum units, toner cartridges and devices are designed to operate under specified thermal and mechanical conditions specifically tailored to each of our unique toner formulations. Peterlee: Since we are not a toner manufacturer, we cannot guarantee toner performance. We cannot explain the life expectancy or rating of the toner. specially selected for each of our individual toner formulations.
