My 2005 Saabaru is a simple 5 speed 4x4 that's fun to drive; Most basic maintenance is doable for the hobbyist with a little help from the Wrx forums. I have changed the valve cover gasket on my 9-2x several times. If you have a 10mm ratchet wrench and a set of 1/4" sockets the job isn't too bad and it's a good opportunity to test other things like spark plugs and coil packs. I use black Permatex for areas where needed and admit that I somehow sacrifice a t-shirt for work no matter how careful I think I am.
