All the hats I used to keep on the high shelf now hang on my closet rail with the brims cut off. That way you can see them all at a glance and somehow nest them within each other. We knit hats, which I cut off at the top so that they hang evenly. I have three or four hats, three baseball caps, a variety of sun hats, raincoats, and a Stetson-style braided straw hat, all hanging on a 12-inch rod in the closet. I'm only about 5ft tall so I reach over to pick up stacks of hats and search through to find the one I want - a waste of time compared to this system. I'm not a fashionista but I do need to avoid excessive sun exposure and living in the South West means wearing hats to make that happen. Every time you can access something easily, life is a lot more fun. I've also used them to hang my windsock collection in another closet where I can see them and again compress them a bit to save space.
