I consider myself at least a competent handyman, but I'll be honest with you: It was more of a chore than I expected. When my door stopped working, accompanied by some rather annoying noises, I discovered that a removed gearbox was the culprit (see photo). Although only gear is available, I went with the full set thinking it would be relatively easy. Not as much. I decided to lower the engine head from the ceiling so I could work from the comfort of my desktop, so it took quite a while. It's on me though; I've never done this, and besides, it has nothing to do with the quality of the kit. Disassembly was a breeze thanks to surprisingly good instructions and YouTube videos. I encountered a few problems during assembly. My Liftmaster has a chain idler that is attached to the top of the gear case. This replacement kit did not have the ability to transfer this idler pulley to a new block. It may not be necessary, but I didn't want to leave it out. I could have drilled and knocked out a new assembly, but instead chose to transfer the new gear onto the old (and undamaged) shaft assembly. I removed the new gear from the shaft and replaced the old shaft assembly components (bushings, roller pins, washers, etc.) with the new parts included in the kit. The fact that these parts were included indicates that the manufacturer considered this possibility since the new shaft assembly had these parts already installed. Surprisingly, the worm wheel on the motor shaft looked normal despite the destroyed drive gear. He was replaced anyway. Lots of lubrication, reassembled and then attached to the chain. Success! The door works perfectly. The bottom line is that while this is relatively easy and doesn't require any special tools, it does take some time, especially if this is your first experience with an opener. I'm sure the swap could have been done without dropping the engine and it would have saved me a lot of time, but this is on a 14 foot ceiling and I didn't want to do everything on the stairs. Note where the wire plugs go (yes), carefully note the order of disassembly of the washers and bushings, and take your time.
