I moved about 85GB of files from an XP computer to a new Win7 computer, but not without problems. Windows Easy Transfer kept crashing on my XP machine until I figured the cable was a waste of money and I had to use flash drives. Finally I went to the Win7 computer and opened My Network or whatever it's called in Win7 to see if I could see the XP computer and maybe use a cable and Windows Explorer to move files. As soon as I did that, the Win 7 computer started downloading some files and suddenly it worked and the files started to flow, but quite slowly. The best time for such a transfer is at night. I suspect the problem is because I installed Easy Transfer on my XP machine before I bought the cable and the version on the CD that came with it may have been older and overwritten the one that was installed. Another lesson here is to get the internet working on the Win7 machine before you start the transfer. Also, I was a little worried about the warning that Windows Easy Transfer will not move programs. I was concerned that it would automatically exclude .EXE files, but that turned out not to be true. This is good because I keep some program files in a different folder than the Program Files folder on my computer. I had to use advanced options to assign specific folders to go to, but I could move everything to Program Files if I wanted to. The warning actually means that Easy Transfer will not register any program files on the new computer. So it's perfectly fine to bring along simple applications that don't distribute .DLLs and controls across Windows/System32, but anything that needs to be registered to know where its various components are, or the default handler for files of a particular one Type should be installed from CDs or downloaded onto a Win7 computer.
