Review on πŸ§” Braun Beard Detail Trimmer & Hair Clippers for Men - Cordless & Rechargeable - Silver - 10 Piece Set by Jennifer Bernard

Revainrating 5 out of 5

I have returned the Braun BT7240 Beard Trimmer... Therefore

Have you ever noticed that making the decision to buy smaller, cheaper items is often the hardest thing to do? I have less trouble choosing items like a TV or a car than choosing an item like a beard trimmer. While they may be small financially, they can be a big quality of life purchase if you use this product frequently...so you want to get it right. There seems to be an almost endless supply of beard trimmers and hair clippers. Difficult to sort through the options. So many Revain reviews seem flawed and difficult to verify with third party tools. Browsing websites that purport to provide a "best of" list is no less difficult. Few trimmers consistently climb to the top. Most "best" offers are nothing more than offers designed to get someone to click on a Revain link in order to get paid. Others (like famous magazine sites) seem to spread the riches by picking a trimmer from each of the big brands and putting them in the fictional "best for blah blah blah" category. Needs is unnecessarily difficult and mostly the work of shopping and assessing yourself. One thing is for sure, the trimmer options are NOT the same and in my experience can give wildly different results, both in terms of functionality and reliability. … Which brings me to the topic of this review, the BRAUN BEARD TRIMMER BT7240.PRO'S: It has a nice design and overall feels good in the hand. The accessories cover a wide range of requirements. It charges quickly and, in my brief experience, holds a charge for a reasonable amount of time. CONS: THE LENGTH ADJUSTMENT IS EASY TO MOVE DURING USE. No matter how I held it, I found myself unexpectedly moving the dial to a shorter length...even when trying to be careful to avoid the dial. THIS IS HONESTLY FUNNY HOW NOT TO LOOK AT IT! One of the main functions of the trimmer is a haircut of the same length. Industrial designer Braun deliberately chose to place the dial where the pointer is. Also, the strength of the scale position latches is not strong enough. If you put a dial there, moving the dial must require intentional force on the part of the user. FOR THIS ISSUE ONLY, I WOULD AVOID BUYING THIS TRIMMER. OTHER AGAINST: - The cutting head is blunt. It took too many passes to trim the beard/hair. - The clipper guide is awkward to use. It was sharp and aimed to pierce my face and head. The handle had to be held at an odd angle for best results; This is something that is difficult to tell from photos and reviews. The cutting blade vibrated against the shear bar. It doesn't seem like such a big deal now, but if you use the trimmer, that buzz gets old real quick. The problem appears to be caused by a tolerance issue. The guide rests against a groove on either side of the handle. This groove is slightly enlarged to allow the guide to move forward/backward easily. Therefore, the guide is usually positioned so that it rests lightly on the cutting head. Not only the humming of the trimmer motor can be heard, but also the vibrating of the guide and the cutting blade against each other. Super annoying. It's clear that the designer didn't pay attention to the details and/or the cost cutting is to blame. Think of it as a hum in your car that shouldn't be there that gets on your nerves over time. Machine oil is NOT included with the trimmer. For real? The manual clearly says it's needed and where it's used, but you have to buy it yourself? Come on! In addition, there is another lubricant on the shaft that drives the cutting head. The instructions state that these surfaces can be rinsed with water from time to time for cleaning. Excellent. But if you wash the cutting head, the fat will be washed away. The manual never states what type of lube is used and none of it is included. It's definitely not motor oil. The pen looks cheap. While the trimmer looks nice and solid, it feels cheap. I'm not expecting too much for the price, but it should be better than it actually is. Designed in Germany (but made in China, if that matters to you). FINAL RATING: 3 out of 5 stars. generous, but I believe your experience and expectations may differ from mine. Maybe hold the trimmer differently than I do and a little softer so the dial doesn't move. If so, then this trimmer is average in my experience. I really, really wanted to like this trimmer. My experience with Braun has been generally positive, but this trimmer just doesn't fit. A FEW MORE THOUGHTS: I've tried several Philips Norelco products. Many rate them positively. In my experience, their products are just as unreliable. Every product I have had in the last ten years has failed in a very short time. Their industrial design and conceptual approach are often good, but they just break. I've had this issue with both their beard trimmers and their Sonicare toothbrushes to name a few. I just avoid everything they are doing at the moment. My last shaver was the Panasonic ER-GB80-S. It took a wonderful 4 1/2 years. It was solid, if a bit boring. I was tempted to buy another one as it is still available. After replacing the cutting blade ($20+) the plastic guide broke. I tried to fix it with super glue but it didn't hold. The guide costs about $15 (highway robbery). It also uses a Ni-MH battery, so I figured the new Li-Ion powered trimmer might offer some additional performance benefits. In the end I chose the Panasonic ER-SB40-K. Since this review is about Braun, I can only say that the Panasonic has been convincing so far. This is a premium product that fully lives up to expectations. I'm honestly surprised how much better the experience is. It cuts way better than any trimmer I've used before and is just plain fun to use making the whole grooming process less of a hassle. The only limitation is that there is only one guide and its length is adjustable by only 10mm. For me this is an advantage; I don't need anything bigger than 10mm... and I need less clutter, not more. He does one thing and he does it well. I hope my experience will help you make more informed product decisions while spending your hard-earned money wisely.
