Review on Nest Security Matters Anywhere Outdoor by Centerfold Montague

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Good looking camera. So-so performance and costs. Update: Skips the obvious events (people) entirely. Guarantee not respected.

Well I've had it for a month now and the Nest Aware free trial just expired. I'm not sure I would subscribe to a service ($100/year for 10 days or $300/year for 30 days of recorded history), even if without that service you lose at least half the usefulness of the system. They should give you at least an hour or two of recorded history so you can actually see the events they're notifying you about. Instead, you only get a snapshot, which doesn't always capture the event well. The camera is ok but not impressive. The image is clear, but not clear enough to identify a stranger. Too often it's hard to tell what caused the events as I often don't see any movement. I believe this may be caused by noise, although I've set it up not to notify me of noise events. Too often, the snapshot they email doesn't show what triggered it. I agree with other reviewers that the USB port was a poor design choice as it required a 3/4 inch diameter hole to pass through. They could do that much better. I love that you can rotate the picture 180 degrees when I mounted mine with the cable facing up. The "walkie-talkie" method of speaking/listening is poor at best, especially with a 2-second delay on both video and audio, making the feature almost unusable. I have excellent signal strength on my wifi and it's 25 Mbps and 5 Mbps so it's not a problem. I'm not sure it would be that difficult for them to do full duplex. You need to provide a hardwired network connection to avoid weak signal issues as not everyone has a strong signal where they need a camera. They would probably sell more cameras if they had them since people could put cameras anywhere without worrying about wifi. Update: If I knew then what I know now, I wouldn't have bought it. I've recently learned that the camera is completely missing the obvious events. I've walked right past the camera a few times lately, but there are NO events on my timeline. No person, no activity, nothing. I watched the recording online and I can clearly see myself approaching the camera, but for some reason Nest misses the event. Nothing else happened back then, so it's not about an event getting lost in the mass of events. It's just that Nest didn't recognize it as an event. This is very concerning as I have no way of knowing if an important event was missed and it's almost impossible to scan the saved recording to find the event because even if I know when the action took place the are Recording viewer tools pretty much useless and you end up having to watch the recording in real time to find what you are looking for. I chatted with tech support but they couldn't help but suggest disabling and re-enabling the settings. For real? It is hopeless. Another update: I thought I'd give Nest Support a chance to fix an issue that's causing my camera to completely miss obvious events such as: B. a person walking directly towards or away from the camera. To work. I have provided detailed video evidence of the events missed and they agree it doesn't work but they don't know why and will not replace the camera under warranty. The bottom line is that Nest does not live up to its guarantee. Another update: I filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau, Nest contacted me the next day. I spent the next week jumping through their hoops trying different things so they could figure out what was wrong. They couldn't so they agreed to refund my money. Even paid for the return. Even though the refund check arrived 6 weeks later, it still arrived. Nest Labs is currently rated D- by BBB. Well deserved if you ask me as the effort required to honor the warranty was just too much.
