My cat is over 14 pounds and about 3 years old. This is a good size cat. Laying it down next to him I was worried it would be too small, but when he got on and I zipped it up, he was lying comfortably on the soft floor. It only took 20 minutes to get to the vet and he seemed comfortable enough being carried and sitting in the car. He obviously couldn't walk, but other than that he seemed content. Carrying it on a shoulder strap didn't work as it transfers your shoulder's movement directly to the cat carrier and it was much smoother when you held it by the handle. But it can get boring after a while. But I don't think another medium would be anything else. It has two small "tent poles" that keep it fully extended. They can be easily removed and folded in half for more compact storage. The only problem was that the fold out side only works if you reach the other opening and open it from the inside - I didn't want to do this in a public place for fear my cat might come out so plan ahead. It seems well built but not fantastic, the zippers are a little cheap and I'm not sure they'll hold up to rough use so I use them with caution.
