Review on Zoom 5241 Ethernet USB Cable Modem by Nick Mosley

Happy - economical, reliable, works well

We suffered for two or three years with two Motorola Surfboard modems provided by Comcast. Eventually, as my wife's plaintive and chiding gaze grew worse, it occurred to me that I could throw away supplier-supplied gear and get customer-supplied gear. I needed to assign a new MAC address to the modem and called Comcast first, but after waiting for their representative and then getting lost when they put me on hold (what's new?), I figured out what to do Heck, and the setup utility ran Comcast on my computer. I did it and a month later the Zoom modem was working fine. No more lost connections and I have a fairly complex system with a Vonage adapter and two routers. In fact, here is the system I'm using: 1) Zoom modem, 2) Linksys BEFSX41 firewall/router as a DHCP server, 3a) a BEFSX41 port to the Vonage Linksys adapter, and 3b) another port on the BEFSX41. to a Linksys router/wireless adapter in my home office that connects to two computers, which in turn serve printers. I keep 1, 2 and 3a in a closet along with all household phone jacks so equipment and cords don't clutter my home office. I have ethernet/cable/phone cords running from a closet to wall outlets in several different rooms. In this configuration everything works. I recommend the Zoom cable modem as an inexpensive and reliable alternative to vendor-supplied devices. I recommend not bothering with renting such cheap equipment anymore. If it stops working, I don't mind buying new hardware and don't rely on a lengthy customer service process to resolve my troubleshoot ticket, sometimes within days or weeks, often with an unsatisfactory resolution. Sellers all too often think that an intermittent service is fine as long as it works when they test it.

Pros
  • Easy install with USB and ethernet ports
Cons
  • Very expensive
