Works great in accessories and consumables

I drive a Subaru Crosstrek which has limited space and appropriately shaped surfaces to accommodate many 3/8x24 antenna mounts, let alone those that have a decent connection to the body. I ordered this magnetic mount as I knew its limitations and was planning to test it with a friend's vector analyzer. I originally planned to use a set of faux hamsticks, but after the first few contacts I switched to a manual screwdriver antenna - that's a story for another report. Conclusion: My experience with this mount is excellent. I'm using a portable 20 watt setup on 160-10m and mostly put phone contacts on 40/20/17m. The mount is centered on the roof and I plug the throttle into the coax where it enters the car. I had no common mode issues at this low power, but the choke improved the VSWR noticeably. There are many derogatory comments about these mounts floating around in the usual online ham radio opinion repositories. You can always spend more time and money to get a better signal. I'm happy with what I have. Mobile RF performance depends on many factors. YMMV. By the way, these fasteners are difficult to remove. I cut the plastic wrap it came in and put it between the magnets and my car's bodywork to make it easier for it to slide off the mount without damaging the paint. Let's see how well this works. Drive safe and have fun.

Cons
  • No insurance
