Installation is not for the novice

Reviews on this product are mixed, particularly around the length of the harness at the back. I've worked with cars since I could walk and have run a business for years, so I consider myself very mechanical. Here is my experience. Initially, this work took about 4 hours. In order to install this and access the car's tail light wiring harnesses, most of the cargo compartment trim needs to come out. If you are an amateur, I do not recommend doing this. You're going to get frustrated and probably break some plastic clips etc if you don't know what you're doing or don't have the right tools. , and that's exactly what happened to me. The left side wiring harness is absolutely not long enough for the module to lay flat on the floor behind the trunk trim panel, let alone near the spare tire. With the harness tight, the module was hanging vertically where it connects to the car harness connector. Also, the double sided tape couldn't hold it to the wall in that position. I ended up removing the driver's side rear quarter panel completely for full access. Then, with it out of the way, I drilled a hole through the inside of the sheet metal at the back corner and used zip ties to secure the unit in place. This configuration had many wires running along the rear floor and on the passenger side to another tail light connector. I called Kurt to confirm and they said the 4 pin connector and wiring harness should be stowed in the spare tire area and then slipped over the rear seal and the sunroof closed on top of that. I'm not the biggest fan of the idea, but since it's my parents' car and rarely used, I caved. along the driver's side under the carpet and plastic panels until I found a drain plug in the floor under the driver's feet. Then I crawled under the car and climbed into the engine compartment. I've found this to be easier than trying to drag it under the car and it's probably better protected that way. One final note: I'm not a big fan of crimp connectors so I soldered all the wire connectors in place and used heat shrink tubing. a tube. I also wrapped the wires in a split harness where I thought there was a risk of chafing on sharp edges etc. And like everything else I used about 100 zip ties all over to secure the wires. The kit comes with about 8 or 10. What's even nicer is that the hitch on this car is very easy and takes about 20 minutes, and that's without the jack that's on the floor of my parents' garage. So if you just want to use it as a bike rack and don't care about the light, easy!
