Summary: Stinks, beads and doesn't work very well. (Scroll down for ingredients) Long review: I have very wavy, dry hair that needs high protein formulas. I also have some issues with heat styling damage. I use Redken's "Color Magnetics" sometimes - as long as it doesn't blow my mind, I keep it rotating. I'm not a brand person and I like to experiment with products from different brands and price ranges. I don't necessarily think SLS and parabens are big evils, I'm just looking for formulas that work for me and meet whatever needs I have at the moment. This stuff had good reviews on the websites I checked, so I ordered it for pickup at my local beauty salon; They made the conditioner but the shampoo was out so I turned to Revain (because of course you need the entire line of products to get all the benefits). Well… I wish I had bothered, and I'm grateful I stuck to the sample size. I currently have a choppy pixie so I use men's styling products because they work best for my hair length. I've developed a tolerance for smelling more like a guy than I ever wanted to. But the smell of this shampoo is too strong - definitely male and way, MUCH stronger than I could stomach. The overpowering scent reminded me of being dragged through salons in the 1980's... Redken products didn't age very well in my opinion. But I can deal with a bad smell if the result is overwhelming. And I wasn't blind. It did almost nothing to me other than lather and smell to such an extent my eyes burned from the cologne stench. So I gave it to my husband. But then he went from just cutesy and deadpan to unsettling…. he shaved his hair into a mohican in early summer and then I bleached and dyed it (one of the "perks” of working from home during the pandemic). To be fair, Redken doesn't advertise this as a color-safe formula, but rather as a stress/damage product. But they also don't advise you not to use it if you have color-treated hair. For years my husband used the $1.19 V05 and happily continued to use the same old cheap "volume" formula after coloring and yet her color stayed enviably bright. Then I gave him Redken Extreme color for four months given after he dyed the paint. He used it once and after getting out of the shower he told me how funny it was that the foam was the same color as his hair. It wasn't sarcasm, he looked quite surprised that the thing had taken his color...because he's the type of guy who doesn't care. But if you color your hair and are not as casual as my husband, DO NOT use this shampoo. FOUR months after painting it is IMPOSSIBLE to see a layer of paint on the foam. Even if the first ingredient is SLS. So whatever they put in it may produce results for some... but it has to be something sinister to cause that "extreme" discoloration; Whatever combination of ingredients Redken invented seems counterintuitive to true hair health. I'd recommend it more as a clarifying shampoo (to build up the product), but it's not sold as such...and most people shouldn't use a clarifying shampoo more than once every few weeks. It also works to mask the smell of an ashtray after a smoky party, or for a mayonnaise treat after a DIY gone wrong. I'm totally amazed that this has any fans at all. In general, high-sudsing shampoos aren't the best for normal hair. And all that extra flavor provides 0 stress benefits, too. Mmmm, but "Protein Complex for Damaged Hair" sounds sooo good! I suspect Redken still has a following due to their almost ubiquitous presence in neighborhood saloons. And they hope that in 2020, enough people will still believe that "rinse and repeat" is a good idea... and that high-lather products that brilliantly target very specific hair needs can do real magic. I may have given up on this too quickly, but I don't have the patience for weeks of multiple washes to see results. Women with overly processed hair like me should avoid this. I know it's possible to get a strengthening, protein-rich formula that doesn't weigh my hair down AND doesn't prematurely fade my color. I don't complain about the price of a product as long as it *works*, but I think they are scamming us with the bunch of formulas they offer. It's like thinking that Science Diet is great pet food just because your vet has it, or that you can't use Excedrin's migraine formula if you have back pain. Such marketing scams.
