Review on 📺 Terk VR1 Auto TV Volume Control by Robert Howell

Revainrating 1 out of 5

Does NOT work as advertised.

I bought an Audiovox Terk VR1 automatic volume control to balance the volume on my HDTV output, which is amplified by my stereo. The aim was to eliminate noisy advertising and differences between different channels. A secondary use would be to enable the stream on my 5 CD changers so CDs with significantly different volume levels would be normalized as well. Because all channels go through a multi-channel EQ, it's easy for me to "see" the difference with and without the VR1. My first impression is that it filters A LOT of audio so I have to turn up the volume a bit to compensate (hence the 3 star rating). It seems to me that the VR1 filters too much and also seems to cut off the bass a bit. Having only had it a few weeks I need more time to rate the overall performance and will edit this review accordingly at a later date. - - - - - **** Edited 09/19/2012 - rate my rating to 1 star as the device makes audible clicks and clicks in the audio stream. It doesn't seem to affect loud, overly amplified commercials or even out the audio, as stated in the product description. The filtering I originally mentioned requires the amp to be turned up to a higher volume, which amplifies most of the background noise (hum, etc.). Clicks can be heard when the source is turned on or off (e.g. when CD changers automatically switch between CDs, when a connected PC is turned on or off, when the TV is turned on or off, or even when changing from channels) - It's as if the device resets itself every time it senses a change in the input current. While the clicks and clicks were pretty annoying, the real deal breaker was that this device didn't seem able to reconcile overly boosted TV ads with the program being watched. Just in case there was "too many moving parts" in my setup, I tried using it with just the TV connected, but still encountered the same issues. I'm glad that Revain will refund the money for the purchase if the device is returned. I also add that the seller (Portable Guy Inc) shipped quickly and the fulfillment process was excellent.
