Review on πŸ”‹ Remanufactured ACDelco Professional Power Steering Pump 36P0791 - Boosted Performance by John Wells

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Requires break-in period

Situation; My wife's 2006 Honda Pilot with 190,000 miles started squealing like crazy in corners; classic symptoms of a failed power steering pump. I scoured the internet looking for reviews on which pumps are the best and settled on the ACDelco pump. My research would tell you to stay away from pumps sold by Cardone, AutoZone and AdvanceAuto. Easy installation of a new pump. I followed a few steps I learned from Honda Pilot's online forums and by subscribing to Alldatadiy.com. did. The amount of junk that came out with the old liquid was impressive. After draining the system it was easy to remove the strap, the two bolts holding the high pressure hose, the clamp holding the low pressure line and finally the two mounting bolts (by 12mm). Removing the pulley nut required a strap wrench to hold the pulley and a quick hit with a 19mm impact wrench. The pulley came off easily by removing it from the shaft (no pulley was needed). I primed the pump on the stand by directing the fluid to the low side and turning the pulley to push it out of the high side. This ensures that the pump does not run dry. I turned it off and installed it on the engine. You will need to replace the o-rings on the low pressure side and the high pressure outlet. I filled the reservoir with genuine Honda power steering fluid, then followed the OEM instructions to bleed the system (which involves starting the engine and turning the steering wheel lock fully a few times to bleed the air). I did this 5 times on each side, and the whining noise started to subside (though not completely). I took the pilot for a ride and then to the parking lot to do Big Eights to further clean the system. After about 10 cycles, the device stopped making any noise. Now I'm happy with the device and how easy it was to swap out. I drove from Atlanta to Orlando this week with no problems. Time will tell how long this lasts. It looks like the ACDelco block is better at rebuilding than the Cardone or AutoZone blocks with a lower overall failure rate (based on comments on the Honda Pilot forums).
