Review on ACDelco GM PF64 Original Equipment Engine Oil Filter by Matt Williams

Disappointed GM: Oil Filter & Accessories

I used an ACDelco oil filter on my old LS1. I thought it was made like crap without a check valve. While you don't technically need an ADBV with an outboard filter, I want one because it looks good. Light, filter without ADBV leaves an unpleasant impression. I have tried Mobil 1, RP, WIX, WIX XP, FRAM Ultra, Baldwin etc on this engine, they were all much better filters than the ACDelco LS1 filter. If GM promotes it, I'm sure it will work well, but it just didn't impress me when I saw it and held it in my hands. Now for today. I recently traded in my old 02 SS for a 19 SS 1LE. When I first changed the oil I was very impressed with the PF64 that came with the car. It looked as good as any filter I used on my old LS1 and looked and felt very high quality. I bought a Baldwin B7422 (which I think is a very good filter and uses a 20psi bypass) to do my first oil change. Then when it came time for my second oil change I decided to just order a PF64 as the one that was on the car looked just as good as the Baldwin I drove (or any RP/Mobil 1/WIX/etc . that I had). . ever driven) is what GM recommends and the car has a factory warranty and it was under $3. Well, this redesign is nowhere near as good as the original PF64 in terms of look and feel. The thin screen at the top of the bottom of the filter looks very ridiculous. I see no need for this. The original didn't use it. This filter might be good enough and probably promoted by GM, but its looks don't impress me compared to other premium filters that cost more. Even unassembled it's not very impressive from what I've seen online. To me, this change is more of a budget change than a design improvement. With the redesign, it has become even smaller. I only gave it 2 stars because of the low price. If it was a $5 or $6 filter I would give it 1 star. Having said that, I will no longer be using PF64 unless they revert to the original PF64.
