Review on StarTech Com SATA USB Cable USB3S2SAT3CB by Hesham Peltier

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Worked great, excellent tech support, check your SSD software and system bios settings

As the title says the cable is fine, check elsewhere if you have problems to have. And please folks, this plugs into a USB port. USB power delivery is limited to 500 mA (USB 2.0) and 900 mA (USB 3.0). You can't connect a 3.5" hard drive or an older 2.5" hard drive with this cable, it's not a cable, it's your computer's USB port. I have purchased several Startech products over the past few years. I like the quality and unassuming presentation. This cable has the added benefit of the old USB to SATA cable I had that it has 2 small LEDs to indicate data access (just like on your computer). I bought this cable at the same time as the new Samsung 500Gb 860 EVO SSD. I have done the process of cloning laptop hard drive to SSD more than 6 times. I've used a different USB to SATA cable and a Samsung SSD before with no issues. I like Samsung because they are good and the cloning software is reliable and easy. Once I plugged everything in and used the latest Samsung software, I had an issue with the software not recognizing the new SSD. Hmm, bad cable? bad SSD? I tried another old SSD I pulled from a previous laptop update and didn't see any problems in Win 10's file explorer. So far nothing with the new SSD. So, in one of the reviews on this product, I saw the Startech tech support phone line. Lo and behold, this (number) worked and I spoke to a real technician in less than 3 minutes. Guys this is an $11 cable I'm impressed with the support. The tech suggested I try formatting it using disk manager in windows which I did while he was on the phone and yes I could format it and then I could see it in file manager and read files to the new SSD /write so it's very good , very unlikely it's a cable or a faulty SSD leaving the Samsung software behind. That one phone call was really helpful and saved me from sending the cable and SSD back as it would be hard to say who the culprit was (not in this case). I then did an old Google search and found that the Samsung Magician software has a reputation for not showing some of the newer versions of their SSDs. Further reading revealed that their data migration tool (the one you use for cloning) doesn't have the issue. After downloading the data migration software, I was able to see and clone the new Samsung SSD. I really can't stress enough how much time I've saved by supporting Startech. It wasn't their knowledge of Samsung's problems, but at least how I could get to the point where I could tell the problem wasn't with the SSD or the cable. Kudos to Startech and their tech support! One issue that has been mentioned in various support posts on Samsung's website (but I suspect it's related to other newer SSDs) is that you can check the BIOS settings for the hard disk controller (SATA). , I had RAID installed but AHCI is preferred. I can't tell if this was part of the problem or not, but it should be kept in mind.
