I have had this basket for 3 months now. It worked great, but then I noticed an issue where it wouldn't close completely. Looking further, I noticed a crack in the base of the cover hedge. I believe that's why the lid won't close. There seems to be a lack of quality here. Since this lid is opened and closed several times a day, it shouldn't be torn. Overall I am very disappointed with the durability of the product, especially for the price. ***Update:*** Upon further investigation, the cause is indeed the cracks seen in the photos I uploaded. I actually have these cracks on both sides of the base of the lid/hung. Over time, as the lid is opened, the force slowly splits the base where the henge and the base of the lid meet. This is a product durability issue and I wouldn't be shocked if further review updates mentioned this! Unwilling to accept defeat! After all, who needs a wastepaper basket that cannot be closed completely? I glued a small magnet under the top of the lid. If you choose to do this, first press to find the "cute" spot, then stick forever. Here are the results: 1.) Stopped forcing open which was causing the underlying problem. In theory, the extra weight will reduce opening force and hopefully stop or significantly slow the formation of cracks and damage. 2.) The magnet provides enough weight to help the auto close flush with the lip. Potential problems from this: harder to open, slower to open due to the extra weight and more stress on the motor, likely to hit the batteries. All in all it works again. How long? The time will show.
