Review on πŸ’Ύ NETGEAR SC101 Storage Hub by Robert Castro

Revainrating 1 out of 5

Far from good for NAS

This is an example of a great idea but lousy execution. Good ideas: (1.) Use two drives in a Raid 1 configuration for data reliability. (2.) Be it a network folder. (3.) Let the customer choose the drives according to their needs and budget. (4.) Make available. This is where good ideas end and lousy implementations begin. Bad Features: (1.) Proprietary file system. If the SC101 itself fails, you will not be able to connect the drive(s) to the PC and recover. You need to buy another SC101. (2.) The drivers you need to download to your computer to access the SC101 are unstable. Every time I booted up the PC they looked like new hardware and needed to be reinstalled. They also disrupted other already allocated network resources and in one case resulted in disk pointers on the PC. So if you thought you were adding or removing files on the SC101, you actually did it on the PC. Find out! (3.) An unreliable firmware update built into Device Manager that I could never get to work. (4.) SSSSLLOOOOOOOW. -- not only when transferring files, but every time you open a dialog like "Open" or "Save". (5.) Bad support - I believe they got the Elbonians from the Dilbert comic to show their support. I never got a reasonable answer to the 3 or 4 questions I posted and just gave them up. Now the device is idle until I can find a replacement. One that can use two Seagate hard drives that I bought specifically for this purpose. I suggest you look for a better device.
