I've never thought about buying a life jacket but better safe than sorry. Best money I've spent. We needed about an inch and a half of suitcase space for our trip to Hawaii, but it was worth it. Used twice there and twice since we got home. This allowed my 6 year old daughter to go to the sea with me and the rest of our family and not have to worry about her not being able to swim. She should enjoy the waves and splash around. At home he protected her and enjoyed his time by the river while dad was busy with his little sister.
