I used to install Bilstein shock absorbers on the front axle, now I install rear shock absorbers. The first problem was removing the nut from the top of each stock shock. I had a lot of access to the left (driver's side) but the right side was mostly obstructed by the RV's bodywork placed on top of the chassis. I raised the right rear corner by removing the body frame from the rear axle. . Finally the pressure on the shock was released and I was able to remove the bottom bolt and loosen the shock. I put a wrench on the nut and just twisted the shock to get it off. Adjusting the right side meant that once I screwed the nut in, I could only turn the nut a few degrees. I've already installed the bottom of the shock, so rotated the shock a few degrees, moved the wrench, backed off the shock, flushed and repeated. All the work was complicated by the fact that it was impossible to see what was happening at the moment of impact. The left shock was a lot easier to install, except I ran out of jacks and had to use a lever to get the shock far enough to finally align the hole with the bracket below. I spent 5-6 hours on this so again if you can find a mechanic that will give you a fair price for the job it might be worth the cost. During a test drive I noticed even more control. I used to tremble a lot, especially when making sharp turns from a spot. At first the RV leaned heavily on the opposite side of the turn and leaned back towards the turn at the end of the turn. I also noticed a lot less drag on the old 20 year old shocks after I removed them compared to the Bilstein. There were no external signs of oil leaks or failure. I'm glad I replaced all four shock absorbers with Bilsteins. Now the motorhome feels much safer when driving.
