For mounting the screen without VESA mount on the back. One might see this as a downside, but I don't think so - the grips holding the screen are visible from the front. But if you think about it, the ends of the brackets should be such that they can support a reasonable weight and thickness. Speaking of thickness, my screen was actually too thin and I had to add a washer to secure the screen. I still give 5 stars because other VESA adapters were much more expensive.
