Review on RaceFace Chester Mountain Bike Pedal: Unbeatable Performance and Durability for Off-Roading Enthusiasts by Brian Micheals

Affordable, durable and good traction so far so good

I finally swapped out the factory pedals on a 17 year old Kona Lava Dome for Chesters. First impressions from the 3 hours I spent with it this weekend are very good. The pedals feel well made and offer MUCH better grip than my old pedals. I weigh about 140 pounds, wear Vans Sk8-Hi Pros (rubber soles) and mostly ride a single track in Wisconsin. My feet felt great on the pump track and trails. My train seemed more efficient. With the ability to do most of the spin, push forward earlier, and bottom pull longer, a few short lifts feel a lot easier. Some areas were a bit wet and I didn't notice any effects. It wasn't the dirtiest ride, but they shed dirt without having to fumble for a stick to clean them. They were just as easy to install as any other pedal. I used a crescent wrench which was probably too wide because I was too lazy to get 15mm and I don't have a pedal wrench. One side is reverse threaded (like any other pedal). It took about 20 minutes mainly because I had to refill my coffee. I can't say much about the durability, except that they didn't come loose on the first ride. There's probably a driver out there somewhere who can break them - I seriously doubt I ever will. There are some lighter options out there, but I'm willing to bet you're not looking at flat pedals if you plan on spending more to save 50-100g. ***Update*** I've put about 100 miles on them now. - semi single track. Very happy with them so far. The pedals get rid of mud well and make me feel confident on the bike. zero problems. Definitely recommend.
